Contracts are not just agreements—they are evidence. When a dispute arises, a regulator asks questions, or an internal audit runs, teams need to show exactly what happened and when.

Formable's audit trail captures the full lifecycle of every document: edits, comments, approvals, and signatures.

What gets recorded

Every meaningful action on a document creates an audit event:

  • Document opened — who accessed the file and when
  • Edits and tracked changes — accepted, rejected, or countered
  • Comments and @mentions — including thread context
  • Revisions requested and resolved
  • Signatures collected — with timestamp and signer identity
  • Exports and downloads

Events are immutable. Nothing is deleted—archived events are hidden from the default view but remain available for audit purposes.

Why granularity matters

A timestamp alone is not enough. Effective audit trails tie each event to:

  1. The actor — name, email, and role
  2. The action — what changed
  3. The document state — which version was active
  4. The context — which clause or field was affected

This level of detail is what makes an audit trail useful in a deposition—not just in a dashboard.

Export and compliance

Teams can export the full trail for a document at any time. Exports include the chronological event log with actor details, suitable for:

  • Internal compliance reviews
  • Regulatory inquiries
  • Litigation support
  • Post-deal retrospectives

For API customers, audit events are also available programmatically—so you can pipe contract activity into your own compliance and analytics systems.

Built for teams under scrutiny

Legal, finance, and healthcare teams operate under frameworks that require demonstrable controls over document handling. An audit trail is not a nice-to-have—it is infrastructure.

Formable records everything by default. You do not configure it, enable it, or hope someone remembered to turn on logging. It is part of how the platform works.

See it in your workflow

The audit trail is most valuable when it is invisible during normal work and indispensable when you need it. That is the bar we designed for: zero friction day-to-day, complete defensibility when it counts.
